Google Earth has launched a virtual tour of Spain’s Prado Museum. By entering what GE is calling the “Prado layer,” users may “fly” virtually through and around a three-dimensional model of the building. Even better: The works have been photographed and uploaded at 14-gigs for (relatively) crystal-clear viewing — and yes, Velázquez’s Las Meninas is on the list. While I haven’t given it a go yet, I’ll be interested in the usability of this feature; given the amount of online content I peruse daily, I tend to lose patience with poorly-designed and/or dysfunctional interfaces.
Do note that Google Earth’s effort isn’t the first time museums have ventured into VR territory: Founded in 1999, Warwickshire-based Virtual Experience Company renders models of mostly UK-based institutions, with a focus on accessibility for the disabled. There are others, I’m sure, but this outfit is the first I recall offhand.
